Formosa 1: Taiwan's 1st Commercial Offshore Wind Farm Inaugurated

Fredericia, Denmark - The goal of the Taiwanese government is to expand offshore wind energy to 5,500 megawatts (MW) by 2025. An important milestone has been reached with the inauguration of Taiwan's first commercial offshore wind farm.

In the course of its future energy supply, Taiwan is focusing on the expansion of offshore wind energy. Ørsted and Siemens Gamesa, who positioned themselves as early movers on the offshore wind market in Taiwan play a major role in Taiwan's first commercial offshore wind energy project “Formosa 1”, which is now officially in operation.

Ørsted built the second phase of the Taiwanese Formosa 1 offshore wind farm with a capacity of 120 MW on schedule in close cooperation with its joint venture partners and has now officially inaugurated it. This represents an important milestone for the world's largest investor, developer and operator of offshore wind farms: it is the first offshore wind farm built by Ørsted in the Asia-Pacific region. The second project stage comprises 20 offshore wind turbines from Siemens Gamesa, each with a capacity of 6 MW. As part of the first phase of Formosa 1, two Siemens Gamesa 4 MW turbines were installed in October 2016 and officially commissioned in April 2017. This gives Formosa 1 a total capacity of 128 MW. Formosa 1 is owned by Ørsted (35 percent), JERA (32.5 percent), Macquarie Capital (25 percent) and Swancor Renewable Energy (7.5 percent).

In addition to Formosa 1, Ørsted remains strongly committed to the expansion of offshore wind power in Taiwan and is currently building the 900 MW Greater Changhua 1&2a project with expected commissioning in 2022. Ørsted has also received a further 920 MW for the Greater Changhua 2b&4 project, which is expected to be completed in 2025 subject to the final investment decision.
