VGB Launches New Wind Benchmark Database and Publishes Position Paper

Essen, Germany - The technical association of energy plant operators VGB Power Tech from Essen and its members deal with the further optimization of plant technology and plant operation in the wind energy sector. A new database is to provide operators with important benchmarks for comparisons. In addition, a harmonised system for systematic plant identification for the construction and operation of wind energy plants promises to increase the efficiency and improve the profitability of plant operation.

New WIPPEX database provides individual benchmarks for WTG operators

VGB PowerTech has now launched its independent database for the comparison of wind turbine platforms under the abbreviation WIPPEX (Wind Power Performance Data Exchange). The database enables a performance comparison of individual wind energy platforms. The database is based on 10-minute averages of SCADA data (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/System for recording and monitoring operating data). Each wind turbine thus has over 50,000 data records per operating year. The data sets include information on characteristic plant parameters such as wind speed, wind direction, nacelle orientation, pitch angle, active and reactive power, rotor and generator speed etc. The database and data base are continuously expanded in cooperation with the plant operators. The participation in WIPPEX is open to all operators of wind turbines.

The VGB Power Tech member companies Stadtwerke München (SWM), EnBW and Vattenfall now participate in the WIPPEX database with the wind turbine platform "Vestas V90-2MW". They have made the data available retroactively as of 1 January 2019, thus creating the data basis for the first analyses. “By comparing the data for a plant type – anonymised by VGB –, benchmarks for the particular wind turbines can be generated individually by the participating company and thus actions for optimisation can be derived”, says Stefan Bogenberger, Chairman of the VGB Strategic Forum "Wind" and Head of Renewable Energies supraregionally at SWM Services GmbH.

VGB RDS PP® as designation standard for the efficient construction and operation of WTG

In addition to the WIPPEX database, VGB PowerTech has developed a standard for the designation of wind turbines under the title RDS-PP® - Reference Designation System for Power Plants: Wind Power Plants* and introduced it already in 2006. According to VGB, RDS-PP enables a clear designation of WTG components and systems, starting with the tip of the blade up to the grid connection and beyond. As an independent standard, this clear labelling is intended to support operators, manufacturers and service providers efficiently in the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of wind energy plants and to reduce costs through simplified spare parts management. The unique designation with the RDS-PP codes is also the basis for digitization applications. Only with unambiguous designation codes a plant can be digitally mapped and then take advantage of the benefits of digitization for operations and technology when operating data is gathered and processed for increased efficiency and optimized life cycle management. As a result, the RDS-PP can be used to generate electricity from wind energy at lower cost in all types of turbines, according to VGB.

Leading WTG operators represented in VGB now appeal in a position paper entitled "Use of RDS-PP® as a harmonized designation system for wind power plants.
