Siemens Gamesa and Vestas Score Points in Asia With New Orders
Zamudio, Spain / Randers, Denmark - Wind turbine manufacturers Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) and Vestas announce new orders from Asia. Siemens Gamesa has been awarded the contract for the largest nearshore project in Vietnam to date. Vestas will supply the wind turbines for a 40 megawatt (MW) wind farm in Japan.
SGRE equips Hiep Thanh wind farm with 18 units of SG 5.0-145 wind turbine
Siemens Gamesa has strengthened its market leadership position in Vietnam after securing its fifth nearshore wind farm project as the Vietnamese government quickly advances on its renewable energy goals. The latest deal adds a further 78 MW to the company’s existing 174 MW it has already secured. According to Siemens, this makes the company one of the largest players on the growing Vietnamese nearshore wind market. The 78-MW Hiep Thanh wind farm will be located 1-3 km off the coast of Tra Vinh Province. The wind farm will feature 18 units of the SG 5.0-145 turbine, which are among the largest turbines on the Vietnamese market.
The project is being developed by EcoTech Tra Vinh Renewables JSC, and its investors, Janakuasa Pte Ltd, Ecotech Vietnam, Climate Investor One, which is managed by Climate Fund Managers (CFM), and ST International. Siemens Gamesa formed a consortium with PowerChina Huadong Engineering Co., Ltd., the leading engineering and construction company in China’s offshore wind power industry, to deliver an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) offering to the customer. Commissioning of the wind farm is expected in the third quarter of 2021. Additionally, the company signed a long-term 10-year contract to provide operation and maintenance services.

Vestas wins 40 MW order with Japan Wind Development for wind project in Nagasaki Prefecture
Siemens competitor Vestas has secured a 40 MW order with Japan Wind Development (JWD) for the Hirado Minami Wind Farm in Japan’s Nagasaki prefecture, following last month’s project win with Japan Wind Development and Tokyu Land Corporation. The order includes the supply and supervision of 11 V105-3.6 MW turbines, delivered with customized 72.5-meter towers. As Vestas points out, the solution was developed in close collaboration with JWD in order to accommodate the extreme local wind conditions, whilst simultaneously minimizing visual impact due to the site’s natural beauty. Vestas will also provide multi-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreements for the wind farm. With an energy-based availability guarantee, this agreement will ensure optimized performance and long-term business case certainty for the customer, Vestas points out. Delivery of Vestas’ turbines will begin in the second quarter of 2021, with commissioning scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2021.
