High Demand: Siemens Gamesa Expands UK Rotor Blade Production

Zamudio, Spain - Siemens Gamesa is to significantly expand its offshore rotor blade manufacturing facility in Hull, England. The turbine manufacturer said the manufacturing area will be expanded by 41,600 square meters to 77,600 square meters, more than doubling its size.

Siemens Gamesa puts the cost of the expansion, which is due to be completed in 2023, at 186 million pounds (around 220 million euros). According to Siemens Gamesa, 200 new jobs will be created in the course of the expansion, bringing the total number of employees to around 1,200.

The largest production facility for offshore wind turbines in the UK will manufacture next-generation rotor blades. To date, more than 1,500 rotor blades have been delivered from Hull to customers around the world. "We’re very much looking forward to adding to this capacity in the future", says Marc Becker, CEO of the Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit.

The rapid development of the offshore wind industry - and the UK government's continued, strong and long-term support for offshore wind - have enabled Siemens Gamesa to move forward with its expansion plans with confidence. Siemens Gamesa is committed to unlocking the potential of wind energy around the globe, with solutions from Hull playing a vital role, Becker added.

Production of offshore rotor blades, already in the pipeline at Siemens Gamesa's Hull plant, is expected to continue while the expansion is constructed. In total, Siemens Gamesa has an order book for offshore wind turbines of 9.4 billion euros.

Siemens Gamesa's share price is down slightly in today's trading. Currently, the share of the RENIXX Group is trading at 23.99 euros, down 0.3 percent (13.08.2021, 08:48 a.m., Stuttgart Stock Exchange). The share price reached its low for the year to date of 21.18 euros on 19 July following a profit warning from the wind turbine manufacturer. Compared to the price at the beginning of the year, the share price is currently down 27 per cent.
