Hamburg, Germany - The expansion of wind energy use in Finland is developing with increasing momentum and Nordex continues to be on a growth course in the Finnish market. The wind turbine manufacturer has received another major order.

A consortium consisting of the Finnish utility Helen Oy and the Ålandsbanken Wind Power Fund has awarded Nordex a contract for the delivery and installation of 25 Nordex N163/5.X turbines for the 147.5 MW "Karahka" wind farm. The contract also includes premium service of the turbines over a period of 35 years.

The "Karahka" wind farm was developed by VSB Uusiutuva Energia Suomi Oy, the Finnish subsidiary of the international project developer and operator for wind energy and PV plants VSB Group, headquartered in Dresden, Germany. The project received construction approval in January 2022. In the meantime, VSB has sold the wind farm to the consortium. VSB continues to handle the infrastructure work, which is scheduled to start in 2023. Delivery and start of installation of the wind turbines by Nordex are scheduled for spring 2024.

The site of the "Karahka" wind farm is located north of the town of Oulainen in the North Ostrobothnia region approximately 40 kilometers east of the Gulf of Bothnia. Due to the harsh weather conditions in the winter months, Nordex is equipping the turbines with an anti-icing system to prevent ice formation on the rotor blades and is supplying the turbines as a cold-climate variant.

In addition, a hybrid tower developed by Nordex itself with a hub height of 168 meters is being used for the first time at the wind farm. According to Nordex, the concrete tower elements for the turbines in the wind farm will be produced in Finland.

Nordex already reported a major order for the Finnish wind farms "Kalistanneva" and "Matkussaari" in March. For the project "Kalistanneva" 30 turbines of the type N163/5.X of the Delta4000 series are planned. The wind farm has also been sold by the independent French renewable energy operator Valorem to the consortium consisting of Helen Oy and Ålandsbanken Wind Power Fund. The Nordex Group is supplying a further 27 turbines of the same turbine type for the "Matkussaari" wind farm. Here, AIP Management is providing flexible, long-term financing in partnership with Valorem. Valorem developed the wind farm and will build and operate it. Both wind farms are being built in the Österbotten landscape, a region in western Finland on the Gulf of Bothnia.
