Deutsche Windguard Consulting Awarded Contract For Meteorological Analysis of Further Offshore Wind Areas in The North Sea

Varel, Germany - The continuously updated site development plan forms the basis for systematic offshore wind expansion in Germany. The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) carries out the central preliminary investigations of the development areas. Deutsche Windguard Consulting will continue to support the planning process with its expertise in the future.

Deutsche Windguard Consulting has received further orders from the BSH as part of the preliminary investigation of new offshore wind farm areas in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North Sea. The agenda includes summarizing reports on the meteorological conditions in areas that are to be put out to tender in 2026 and 2027 according to the site development plan (FEP).

Deutsche Windguard examines offshore areas in the North Sea

The testing and calibration laboratory Deutsche Windguard Consulting GmbH from Varel in Lower Saxony, which is accredited by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, will also be commissioned by the BSH to assess the meteorological conditions in areas N-13.1, N-13.2 and N-6.8 in the North Sea EEZ, which are to be put out to tender in 2026 and 2027 in accordance with the FEP dated January 20, 2023.

Deutsche Windguard Consulting has already delivered corresponding reports for the offshore areas N-9.1, N-9.2 and N-9.3, which were put out to tender by the Federal Network Agency at the end of February 2024 and published by the BSH with the invitation to tender. And the Windguard team is currently working on the investigation of the meteorological conditions of the areas N-10.1 and N-10.2 to be put out to tender in 2025.

BSH contract for further meteorological reports and multi-year reference time series

Part one of the services now commissioned includes the concurrent review of the meteorological measurements performed by other contractors using floatinglidar buoys. In the second part, the measurement data obtained in this way serves as a basis for the team of experts in the Energy Yield & Site Assessment division.

"In order to reliably assess the wind potential, a correction of the measurement data is necessary, considering wake effects of neighbouring wind farms. At Deutsche WindGuard we even go one step further: To take into account grid-related curtailments of nearby wind farms, we conduct a dynamic wake correction of each 10-minute measurement value based on different wake modelling approaches, which makes this correction more realistic and significantly more accurate," explains Cordes.

The corrected data is then correlated to create a long-term reference for a period of at least ten years. Finally, the values are transferred to the areas under consideration using additional model data.

In addition to the wind potential assessments for new offshore areas, Deutsche Windguard Consulting was commissioned by the BSH to create a multi-year reference time series. As with a virtual measuring mast, all previous measurement data is to be merged so that the time series can represent an important reference for wind conditions in the North Sea in the future.
