Hydrogen Auction: Enertrag Auctions 500 Tons of Green Hydrogen From New Electrolysis Plant

Dauerthal, Germany - Enertrag has announced a public auction for 500 tons of green hydrogen at the E-World 2025 trade fair. The hydrogen is to come from the new electrolysis plant currently under construction in Osterwedding near Magdeburg, which is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2025.

With a capacity of 10 MW, the plant will produce around 900 tons of green hydrogen per year. The raw material in the form of electrical energy will come exclusively from onshore sources, in particular from Enertrag's wind farms. The green hydrogen production plant will help to stabilize the electricity grid by balancing out fluctuations in electricity generation from wind and solar energy, according to Enertrag.

The 500 tons of hydrogen auctioned can be used, for example, to produce around 5,000 tons of green steel, provide fuel for H2 buses or trucks for around 5 million kilometers or produce 2,500 tons of green methanol.

“ The challenges of ramping up the hydrogen economy require inventiveness and determination. Through this auction, we are sending a clear signal for the beginning of a new era in energy supply,” explains Thomas Barkmann, Head of H2 Sales at Enertrag.

Enertrag is developing hydrogen plants at numerous other locations along the H2 core grid. Two new hydrogen plants with a total electrolysis capacity of 185 MW are being built along the H2 core network in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Together, they will produce up to 17,000 tons of hydrogen per year from 2028.
