Siemens Gamesa: 8 MW Offshore Wind Turbine Receives Type Certification

Hamburg, Germany - Siemens Gamesa has received offshore type certification for the company's 8-megawatt offshore wind turbine (WTG). The market implementation can start now.

In view of the ambitious targets for the expansion of offshore wind energy, the new large WTGs, like the Siemens 8 MW offshore turbine, offer advantages in terms of energy yield and specific electricity generation costs. The certification of the plant by DNV GL is therefore an important milestone on the way to the realization of large offshore wind farms such as Hornsea 2 in Great Britain or Greater Changhua 1 & 2a in Taiwan.

Type certificate opens the way for market launch

The consulting and certification service provider DNV GL has awarded Siemens Gamesa the Type Certificate for Offshore for its offshore wind turbine SG 8.0-167 DD. The certificate confirms full compliance of the turbine design to the international wind turbine standard IECRE OD-501 and allows for immediate market implementation. The Siemens Gamesa 8 Megawatt (MW) turbine will be installed in offshore wind farms worldwide, including the 1,400 MW Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm in the UK and the 900 MW Greater Changhua 1 & 2a project in Taiwan. According to Siemens Gamesa, the SG 8.0-167 DD turbine will increase annual energy production by 20 percent compared to the previously certified SWT-7.0-154 turbine. At the same time, specific electricity production costs will decrease.

"We are pleased to receive the full Type Certificate for offshore from DNV GL for our SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbine," says Morten Pilgaard Rasmussen, Offshore Head of Technology at Siemens Gamesa. " Shortening the time-to-market enables us to more swiftly deliver our products to our customers, and continue our contribution to combatting climate change“.

First order for 4.X platform from China

While the next turbine generation is entering the market implementation phase, Siemens Gamesa has received a major order from China for the Siemens Gamesa 4.X platform within the current plant portfolio. This is the first order from China for this turbine-type. The order comprises a total of 42 wind turbines with an output of 4.8 MW as well as a 5-year contract for operation and maintenance services for the 200 MW wind farm. The project was developed by the local independent power producer Xinjiang TBEA Group, which also commissioned the turbines. This is the second order Siemens Gamesa has received from TBEA. The wind farm is located in the city of Changji in the region of Xinjiang, northwest China. According to the manufacturer, the Siemens Gamesa 4.X platform with its 145 meter long rotor variant is a good fit fort he project site conditions featuring medium wind, sandy and dusty weather, and low temperatures during winter time. " We’re delighted to see our first project landing in Xinjiang and strengthen our partnership with TBEA to support its expansion in the renewable energy sector," said Richard Paul Luijendijk, CEO of SGRE Onshore APAC.

Pressure on Siemens Gamesa share continues

The Siemens Gamesa share is currently unable to benefit from the positive news. Yesterday (October 8, 2019), the share price was still under pressure in a generally tense stock market environment due to the trading conflicts with the U.S. and the threat of Brexit. The Siemens share lost 2.1 percent yesterday and closed at 11.44 euros (Stuttgart Stock Exchange).
