Offshore Wind Market USA: Ørsted Joint Venture Receives Final Approval For Sunrise Wind Offshore Wind Farm

Fredericia, Denmark - Sunrise Wind, the 50/50 joint venture between the Danish energy group and offshore specialist Ørsted and the American energy supplier Eversource, has now been given the green light for the US offshore project of the same name.

With the approval of the Construction and Operation Plan (COP) by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) of the US Department of the Interior, the final approval is now in place to begin offshore construction work on Sunrise Wind, New York's largest offshore wind farm project.

The COP approval outlines the project’s one nautical mile wind turbine spacing, the requirements for the construction methodology for all work occurring in federal ocean waters, and mitigation measures to protect marine habitats and species.

With a capacity of 924 MW, the offshore wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power nearly 600,000 homes in New York once operational.

"Sunrise Wind is a centrepiece of New York’s clean energy vision, and with this final federal approval, we can officially put the construction phase in motion. BOEM’s approval is an important milestone?not just for New York but also for America’s domestic energy sector," said David Hardy, Executive Vice President and CEO of Ørsted's Americas Region.

Ørsted has announced that the Sunrise Wind team will now accelerate work on the onshore transmission system, while offshore construction is scheduled to begin later this year at the project site approximately 30 miles (about 48 kilometers) east of Montauk, New York. The project is expected to be c operational in 2026.

The Ørsted share price rose by 0.7 percent to EUR 52.70 this morning. Compared to the price at the turn of the year, the share is up 5.1 percent.
