RWE Receives License For up to 2 GW Offshore Wind Power Capacity in Australia

Essen, Germany - The energy group RWE is entering the Australian offshore wind market. The company has secured the first offshore wind project in Australia with a capacity of up to 2 GW (2,000 MW).

RWE has received a license from the Australian government to develop an offshore wind farm near the Kent Islands in the Bass Strait off the coast of Gippsland in the state of Victoria. This area is Australia's first designated offshore wind zone.

The site is located approximately 67 kilometers off the coast with average water depths of 59 meters. The wind farm is expected to go into operation in the first half of the 2030s, provided that the planning and approval procedures and grid connection are completed on time and the marketing of the electricity is secured.

With this license approval, RWE receives an exclusive seven-year right to develop the Kent offshore wind farm. With the approval, RWE can also apply for a commercial license for the construction and operation of the wind farm for up to 40 years.

RWE plans to invest around 6 billion Australian dollars by 2030 to develop up to 3 GW (3,000 MW) of onshore wind, solar and battery projects across the country. RWE is headquartered in Melbourne.
