Wind Market Germany: Nordex Group Awarded RWE Contract For Repowering Projects in Lower Saxony

Hamburg, Germany - At the end of March, Nordex received an order from RWE to supply and install eleven Delta4000 series turbines for two projects in Lower Saxony.

Both wind farms in the Peine district and in Salzgitter are repowering projects in which 17 older turbine models will be replaced by 11 much more powerful turbines.

Overall, this will allow the capacity of the wind farms to be doubled from 30.6 MW to 61.8 MW, while at the same time reducing the number of turbines. Nordex will supply 7 N149/5.X turbines and one N133/4800 turbine with a total capacity of 44.7 MW under the order for the Lesse wind farm. The Barbecke wind farm with 17.1 MW will be fitted with three N149/5.X turbines.

The Federal Network Agency had awarded the two RWE projects in the tender for onshore wind turbines on the bid date of February 1, 2023.

"In the case of repowering, less is more. Thanks to efficient modern turbine technology, the electricity generated by older wind farms can be increased significantly using a smaller number of turbines," says Felipe Villalon Waldburg-Zeil, Director Sales Region Central at Nordex Group. Repowering of onshore wind turbines will become increasingly important in Germany in the future. Nearly 6,000 older turbines have been in operation for more than 20 years, Waldburg-Zeil added.

Nordex stock was able to halt last week's recent downward trend today and is currently trading up 0.7 percent at EUR 11.845 (4:21 p.m., April 12, 2023 Stuttgart Stock Exchange).
