Port Of Rotterdam Accelerates Offshore Wind Expansion: New 45-Hectare Terminal In The Port Of Rotterdam Eliminates Capacity Bottlenecks

Rotterdam (Netherlands) - Offshore ports play a crucial role as central logistics hubs for the expansion of offshore wind energy. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has announced plans to develop a 45-hectare terminal on the Maasvlakte for offshore wind projects.

According to the port authority, the expansion is essential for the development of wind farms in the North Sea. Until now, limited port capacity has slowed the sector; the new terminal will remove these bottlenecks. The terminal will offer facilities for storage, transport, assembly, and pre-assembly of wind turbine components. An 835-meter heavy-lift quay, modern logistics infrastructure, and direct access to the North Sea will support terminal operations from mid-2029.

“With this new terminal, we are making an important contribution to the necessary capacity for the offshore wind sector. Due to its direct location on the North Sea, deep draught and existing offshore cluster, the port of Rotterdam is ideally suited for these activities,” commented Matthijs van Doorn, Commercial Director of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, on the current plans.

The terminal will provide space for jack-up vessels and facilities for pre-assembly work. A roll-on/roll-off facility is intended to simplify loading and unloading processes. In addition to supporting the construction of offshore wind farms, the terminal is also intended for their future decommissioning.

Market participants can now submit their ideas as part of a public consultation. The future operating model of the terminal will be determined based on the results.

The project underscores Rotterdam’s role as a key logistics hub for European offshore wind energy and contributes to the energy transition by strengthening renewable energy infrastructure.
