Juwi Focuses on Repowering: Two New Juwi Wind Turbines Boost Energy Yield b a Factor of 2.5 - Number of Turbines Halved

Wörrstadt/Mannheim (Germany) - Two new wind turbines of the type Vestas V162, each with a capacity of six megawatts, have been commissioned at the Minfeld wind farm in Rhineland-Palatinate.

As part of a repowering project, they replace four older 1.5-megawatt turbines dating from 2004 and will feed around 30 million kilowatt-hours of electricity into the grid annually – enough to supply approximately 10,000 households. As a result, the wind farm’s output increases by a factor of 2.5, even though the number of turbines has been halved.

The repowering project was planned and constructed by Juwi GmbH, while the turbines are operated by MVV Windenergie GmbH, a sister company of Juwi.

The new turbines have a hub height of 169 meters and a rotor diameter of 162 meters. Compared to conventional power generation, they save around 20,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, according to Juwi.

Repowering - the replacement of older wind turbines with modern, more powerful and higher-yielding units - provides fresh momentum for the energy transition while ensuring that the number of turbines does not grow excessively, said Juwi Managing Director Christian Arnold, who is responsible for the company’s operational business in Germany.

With the Minfeld project, MVV continues to expand its wind power portfolio. Since its first project in 2010 in the Rhein-Hunsrück district, Juwi has implemented 40 repowering projects, replacing 135 old turbines with 121 modern wind turbines. This increased total installed capacity from 131 to 443 megawatts. On average, nominal capacity rose by a factor of 3.4, although the increase in energy yield is likely even higher due to greater hub heights.

“Through the repowering implemented by Juwi, we are optimizing our generation portfolio, strengthening regional value creation and increasing independence from international energy markets and their price fluctuations,” said Ernst Kauder, Managing Director of MVV Windenergie GmbH.

“Every wind turbine is an important signal for the urgently needed expansion of wind energy. The expansion of renewable energy remains a key pillar of a sustainable and reliable energy supply in Rhineland-Palatinate,” Arnold added.

Since its founding 30 years ago, Juwi has installed more than 600 wind turbines in Rhineland-Palatinate with a total capacity of around 1,500 megawatts, corresponding to a market share of over 35 percent in the state, according to the company.
