Preferred Supplier: RWE Selects Siemens Gamesa Turbines for 1,000 MW Offshore Wind Farm in Denmark
Essen, Munich / Germany- RWE is taking another step forward in the construction of the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark. The signing of a preferred supplier agreement with Siemens Gamesa sets the further course.
Yesterday (11/01/2023), executives from RWE and Siemens Gamesa met at the Danish National Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines in Østerild to celebrate the signing. Just metres away from the Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD prototype turbine, they underlined their increased commitment to providing clean energy in Denmark.
RWE will build the Thor wind power plant in the Danish North Sea, about 22 kilometres from Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland. Installation of the turbines at sea is expected to begin in 2026. The installation work is to be carried out from the port of Esbjerg, Denmark. Both RWE and Siemens Gamesa intend to use skilled local labour during the construction and commissioning of the project, both in port and at sea.
The Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD wind turbine is the flagship offshore wind turbine manufactured by Siemens Gamesa (part of Siemens Energy). It has a capacity of almost 15 MW and a rotor with a diameter of 236 metres and an amazing swept area of 43,500 square metres. This allows the SG 14-236 DD to increase annual energy production (AEP) by more than 30 per cent compared to its predecessor, according to Siemens Gamesa. The turbine features Siemens Gamesa's patented IntegralBlades, each 115 metres long.
Once fully commissioned, scheduled for the end of 2027 at the latest, the Thor offshore wind power plant could meet the green electricity needs of more than one million Danish households.
