Equinor Harnesses Synergies: Equinor’s First Solar And Wind Hybrid Power Plant Starts Operation

Stavanger (Norway) – The Norwegian company Equinor, through its Brazilian subsidiary, has commenced commercial operations of the company’s first hybrid power plant worldwide.

The Serra da Babilônia solar park is strategically located next to the existing Serra da Babilônia wind farm in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

Together, the two assets form a hybrid complex with 140 MW of solar and 223 MW of wind capacity, marking the first hybrid asset in Equinor’s power portfolio.

“Hybrid projects that effectively integrate solar and wind technologies support a stable and reliable energy supply while enhancing value creation, in line with Equinor’s strategy. Such projects and the integration of technologies will be important for building a competitive power business,” said Helge Haugane, Executive Vice President for Power at Equinor.

The combination of the two renewable technologies reduces the typical volatility of solar and wind power and strengthens grid stability.

Serra da Babilônia Solar leverages the existing wind farm infrastructure, which, according to Equinor, reduces operational and maintenance costs. The estimated annual output is 236 GWh, sufficient to power around 143,000 Brazilian households. The electricity will be sold through Equinor’s trading company Danske Commodities in São Paulo.

"Brazil is a key area for Equinor’s long-term growth. WWith Serra da Babilônia Solar operational, we now have around 600 MW of solar and wind capacity in power production, which we can further optimize through our trading arm Danske Commodities based in São Paulo,” said Veronica Coelho, Senior Vice President and Country Manager of Equinor Brazil.

Equinor’s power portfolio in Brazil, in addition to the Serra da Babilônia complex, includes stakes in solar plants in Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, as well as a 1.5 GW pipeline of onshore wind and solar projects. The subsidiary Rio Energy, fully owned by Equinor since 2023, serves as the platform for growth in onshore power production in Brazil.
